Sin to Match Up Against Hk in the Inaugural Hong Kong Singapore Cup

The inaugural Hong Kong Singapore Cup will take place at the Toa Payoh Sports Hall on Sunday, 19 February.

Following their successful training tour in New Zealand, Team Singapore, ranked 20th in the world will take on Hong Kong, ranked 26th as part of their preparations for the SEA Games in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in August.

The Hong Kong-Singapore Cup will be an annual event which will see the two Asian sides pitching themselves against each other over 3 days. The first 2 days will be closed training matches in which the teams will be rotating their squads. The final 12 players to represent Singapore in the Hong Kong Singapore Cup match on Sunday, 19th February will be selected following the two training matches. The Hong Kong Singapore Cup on Sunday is open to public.

Singapore last played Hong Kong in the 2016 Asian Netball Championships, in the round game as well as in the bronze medal match. Singapore triumphed on both occasions, winning 32-18 and 34-27. The games were much closer than the score suggests, as Hong Kong had more attempts on goal in the second game than Singapore did.

Former Singapore National Coach, Ruth Aitken, will be in town for the series against Hong Kong as the Technical Consultant to the Singapore team. Aitken will team up with interim National Coach, Yeo Mee Hong, for the series. Aitken was also attached to the national squad during their NZ tour last week.

Cyrus Medora, Chief Executive Officer of Netball Singapore, said, “We are pleased to announce the inaugural Hong Kong Singapore Cup. The event will be a good test to the National team that is training very hard for the SEA Games. The past matches between our two teams have always been very close and I am certain that the teams will present a thrilling match on Sunday.”

Following the test series, the National players will be competing in the M1 Netball Super League (NSL) from 4 March to 29 April in their respective NSL teams. The NSL is the selection base for the National Squad for 2017 and the squad announcement will be made on 29 April.

The test match on 19 February will start at 10am at the Toa Payoh Sports Hall. Admission is free.
