A more exciting season is in store with the introduction of the two-point super shot to the Deloitte Netball Super League.

The rule, which will be implemented when the season tips off on Feb 14, allows players to score two points from a designated zone in the final five minutes of each quarter.

The super shot has already featured in overseas leagues, including Australia’s Super Netball and the Netball Super League in Britain.

Players from the six teams in the Deloitte Netball Super League – Blaze, Mannas, Fier Orcas, Llabten, Swifts and Sneakers – are excited to take on the new challenge.

After settling for silver at the last two SEA Games that featured the sport, the Singapore netball team is determined to finally capture gold at the regional competition in Thailand next month.

The Vandas have been training relentlessly with this goal in mind – a mission bolstered by their victory at the Asian Netball Championships last year.

After playing bridesmaid in its past two SEA Games, the Singapore netball team wants a golden crown in Thailand this time. The Vandas say preparations all year long have revolved around this target and their chances are bolstered by their Asian Championships victory last year.

Dancing to the song, Jowi, proved to be the perfect move for the Kenyan netball team on Nov 8, for the tune – which in their native language Luo is about a buffalo “that is a very strong animal and doesn’t retaliate” – was the soundtrack of their strong title defence at the Singlife Nations Cup.

A 55-42 victory over hosts Singapore in the final saw the world No. 23 team maintaining their unbeaten record en route to the trophy at the OCBC Arena.

The Vandas will face defending champions Kenya in the Nations Cup title-decider at OCBC Arena on Nov 8, marking the second successive year that both sides are contesting the final, with the Kenyans winning 61-33 in 2024.

A month after that defeat, Singapore ended a 10-year wait for the Asian crown, giving coach Tara Steel hope that another decade-long drought will be over next month – Singapore’s last SEA Games netball gold was on home soil in 2015.

With an 11-goal deficit to overcome after a poor third quarter, Singapore faced an uphill battle against Kenya at the Singlife Nations Cup on Nov 4, fighting to maintain their unbeaten record in the tournament.

While the Vandas rallied to secure a comeback at the OCBC Arena, it was a case of too little, too late as the defending champions held on to win 49-44.

The Singapore Vandas maintained their perfect start at the Singlife Nations Cup, putting up another dominant display on Nov 3 to secure a 61-32 win over Papua New Guinea.

With two wins in two games, world No. 22 Singapore, who began their campaign with a 61-37 win over the Isle of Man, head into their next match against defending champions Kenya with confidence, a challenging encounter they are eager to embrace.

National netballer K. Mishalenee opens up about her journey from playful kid to Asian champion, overcoming injury and self-doubt, and gearing up for her first SEA Games.

Playing in front of a home crowd always makes Singapore goal shooter Amandeep Kaur Chahal extra nervous.

But the 25-year-old goal shooter has learnt to channel those nerves into positive energy and get into the zone, doing just that on the opening day of the Singlife Nations Cup netball tournament on Nov 2.

When the Singlife Nations Cup returns from Nov 2 to 8, she will be back at the same venue – this time on the court, following her return to the national team in April after a year-long break.

The countdown to the SEA Games starts now. As the Nations Cup 2025 gets underway at the OCBC Arena, Netball Singapore’s K Mishalenee and Matilda Narayan tell Sports Minutes why the home tournament isn’t just a warm-up, it’s their stage to shine and a chance to gain winning momentum.

The Singapore Vandas, the national women’s netball team, returns to home court for the Singlife Nations Cup, an annual international tournament, which will be held at the OCBC Arena from Nov 2 to 8.

At the sixth time of asking, Singapore are finally crowned queens of Asian netball. Hosting the Asian Netball Championship at the Toa Payoh Sports Hall, the Singapore Vandas beat Malaysia, the Maldives and India in the group stage and Thailand in the semi-final. They then prevail 53-39 against Causeway rivals Malaysia in the final to lift their first Asian title.

The South Korean city of Jeonju witnessed the Singapore Under-21 team’s foiled attempt to regain the Asian Youth Netball Championship (AYNC) title in 2023, as they lost 49-45 to defending champions Malaysia in the final.

But at the Jeonju Hwasan Gymnasium – the very place where they fell two years ago – the Republic picked themselves up on July 4, beating the same opponents 49-29 to bring home the gold for the first time since 2017.

This was the fourth consecutive time that the Causeway rivals had met in the continental final, with Singapore prevailing eight years ago before losing in 2019 and 2023.

It was heartbreak for the Singapore U21 Netball team two years ago at the 2023 Asian Youth Netball Championships, when they lost the title to Malaysia in the finals in Jeonju, South Korea. It’s a memory that’s still vivid in most of the players. This year, they’re out for redemption.

Now already back in Jeonju, where heartbreak struck two years ago, the team is fired up and ready for another shot at the title. The Singaporeans have reached three consecutive finals at the Asian Youth Netball Championships, facing off against their Causeway rivals each time.  They triumphed the first time in 2017, but fell to the Malaysians in both 2019 and 2023.

For Norah Paul Gabriel, who was a key player at the 2023 edition, lifting that trophy on 4th July will be bittersweet, and is something she wants—bad.

The Vandas bagged the Team of the Year (Sport) accolade, with Yeo Mee Hong, who led them to their first Asian triumph in 10 years, named Coach of the Year. Netball Singapore president Trina Liang said: “We didn’t expect it, but to win a double has been the icing on top of the cake. “The team is going to be overjoyed when they hear about it, more so Mee Hong – she really deserves this. She’s been coaching for 20 over years, this is a culmination of all her effort over all these years.”

Despite falling short of a title in their first international outing of the year, the Singapore Vandas took heart from their United Arab Emirates (UAE) Netball Cup campaign, which ended in a 62-53 loss to Namibia in the final on June 21.

This was the first tournament under new head coach Tara Steel, who was appointed in March, and offered several positives as world No. 26 Singapore look to build towards a pivotal year that includes November’s Singlife Nations Cup and the SEA Games in Thailand in December.

With 2025 shaping up to be a pivotal year for the national netball team – there are three major competitions, including the SEA Games – goal shooter Priscilla Wong was eager to stake her claim and make her international debut.

Other than the six initiatives receiving extra funding, the President’s Challenge will also support 54 other programmes with funding of $105,000 to $300,000 each, spread over three years.This includes Netball Singapore’s Netball Rising programme – a new initiative to provide regular coaching and competitive opportunities to potential athletes aged 12 to 17 from underprivileged backgrounds.

The Singlife National League 2025 has now started, and it is the biggest edition to date, with 94 teams to compete.

SINGAPORE – Since arriving in Singapore about a fortnight ago, new national netball coach Tara Steel’s schedule has been filled with meetings and matches as she seeks to gain a deep understanding of the local scene.

Since 2019, Toh Kai Wei has been living with a nagging feeling of regret. Come December, the Singapore netball co-captain will get a chance to banish the ghost and get her hands on an elusive SEA Games gold medal.
