Gaby Hochbaum Appointed to the INF Board

We are pleased to announce that Gaby Hochbaum, the Honorary Secretary of Netball Singapore, was appointed a Board Member of the International Netball Federation (INF) at the recent Congress in Sydney. She had been elected by the member countries of the Asian Netball Federation in early July, and this was ratified at the INF Congress. Hochbaum was a former national captain, representing Singapore from 1997 to 2003.

Hochbaum formally took on her role as INF Board Regional Director, Asia Region on 18th August 2015 for a 4-year term. The INF Board has 9 Directors, including 5 Regional Directors.

The Asian Region, with 20 member countries, is not only the largest region in INF, it is also the fastest growing region in the World in recent years. INF has more than 70 member countries across 5 regions – Africa, Americas, Asia, Europe and Oceania.

Hochbaum joins the Board at an exciting time. She said, “It is a great honour for me to be elected to represent Asia on the INF Board. INF has made great strides in recent years, and our challenge is to continue to evolve and modernise netball in our ever changing environment. Netball has achieved a much higher level of prominence, regionally and worldwide, in recent years through major events like the Netball World Cup, Fast5 and the SEA Games. The INF Board will be working hard to get the sport more widely played while at the same time keeping our focus on the betterment of women through sports.”

It is estimated that over 20 million play the sport in over 90 countries. It is the largest women’s team sport in the World, a position that the INF intends to keep. Netball is one of the 5 core sports of the Commonwealth Games. It is a recognised sport by the IOC, which has made the inclusion of more female athletes one of its priorities in the coming years. Netball continues to strive to be an Olympic sport and to be included in multi-sport events at the regional level.
