Champions win in extra-time, Again

Singapore, 12 July 2008 – In last year’s final, arch-rivals Adidas Sneakers Ace notched up a 39-36 win over Nike Air in extra-time, after both sides were level at 32-32 at the end of regulation.

Nike were back to challenge the title this year, but thing were not going smoothly for them as the Adidias side pipped them in the Energizer National League 2008 Division 1 Final on Saturday, winning 50-47 in extra-time at the Toa Payoh Sports Hall.

In a thrilling encounter, the two teams were locked at 40-40 at full time. The champions pulled away to lead 46-44 in the first seven-minute period and always stayed ahead to seal their fourth consecutive title. Nike had beaten Adidas 39-32 in a round robin clash earlier, but could not repeat the feat.

Nike stormed to a 22-17 lead after two quarters, prompting a change in Adidas’ gameplan. Goal Shooter Susan Sidhu was switched to Goal Attack and the move paid dividends.

With Sidhu giving the midfielders a boost, Adidas ramped up their attack in the fourth quarter, levelling the scores at 39-39 with three minutes left on the clock. Nike’s Goal Shooter Rachel Yim chalked up a point and Adidas’ Jenny Lee responded for the tie at full-time.

In extra-time, Adidas and Nike were neck-to-neck with the first six points before the champions took command at 46-44. Adidas never looked back and Ng pointed to the switch in tactics as key.
