Singapore Announces Team for Mission Foods Nations Cup 2016

Netball Singapore is proud to announce the team that will represent Singapore at the 11th edition of the Mission Foods Nations Cup this September. Team Singapore at the Mission Food Nations Cup will see the return of the same set of players from the Asian Netball Championships tournament in Bangkok earlier this month, which saw Singapore achieve third placing and was undefeated through the group stages until meeting Sri Lanka in the Semi Finals.

Following the new team’s performance at the Asian Netball Championship, Captain Vanessa Lee, together with Nurul Baizura and Charmaine Soh as Co-Vice Captains, will lead the team for this year’s Nations Cup to play against five other national teams like Papua New Guinea and debutants Zambia.

The Mission Foods Nations Cup 2016 will be one of the most competitive edition to date with the teams closely ranked. Five of the nations, except Ireland (25th) are placed in the 15th to 19th band of world rankings. 2015’s 1st Runner-up, Papua New Guinea (15th) and Zambia (16th) are ranked ahead of Singapore who is at 17th. Botswana (18th) and Canada (19th) followed closely behind.

National Coach, Ruth Aitken said, “The team has worked very hard for the previous tournament, which is also a very good preparation for the Mission Foods Nations Cup this September. Everyone, including the new members have been stepping up and I believe that the team has the right mindset for the upcoming Nations Cup. The team is getting seasoned and have been showing a lot of promise, so we are looking forward to a good showing.”

“This is the second major tournament we will be playing as a team. The more we play and train together, the more we get used to each other’s style of play and can read each other’s movement on court. I believe that we will be playing stronger for the Mission Foods Nations Cup. The teams are all very competitive but we relish the tough challenge. We always enjoy playing at home and the support of the Singapore crowd will spur us on so we urge our fans to come in full force to support us”, added captain Vanessa Lee.

Supporters can catch the exciting international netball action from the 4th to 10th September at the OCBC Arena, Sports Hub.

Early bird tickets goes on sale starting today till 31 August with prices starting at $3. The public also gets to enjoy up to 40% off passes like the Family Package and Season Pass during the early bird ticket sales period.
