The National Environment Agency (NEA) has forecast that warmer temperatures are expected in the next fortnight and could reach a high of 36 degrees Celsius on a few days. The warmer conditions are due to the continuing influence of the El Nino, the presence of a dry and warm air mass over the region and the occurrence of the equinox. Exercising in this hot and dry weather may pose an increased risk of heat stress resulting in serious consequences when heat-related illness develop.
The health impact of the unusually warm days is dependent on one’s health status, the temperature, and the length and intensity of exposure to the sun. Do encourage staff and athletes to adopt the following measures that can help to prevent and minimize the risk of heat-related illnesses and heat stress:
1. Drink plenty of water before, during and after you are active. This is very important especially when you do intense exercise.
2. Avoid strenuous activity in hot, humid weather or during the hottest part of the day usually between 12pm to 4pm.
3. Seek your doctor’s advice or use caution during your physical activity in the heat if you have health risks or pre-existing medical conditions.
4. Take frequent breaks in the shade.
5. Wear light-colored, light-weight loose fitting clothing so your skin can cool through evaporation.
6. Watch out for symptoms of heat stress
– Fatigue
– Nausea
– Headache
– Confusion
– Light-headedness
7. If any person one experiences such symptoms, take the individual out of the heat, lie them down with their legs elevated. If symptoms do not improve in 5-10 minutes or if you are in any way concerned, seek immediate medical assistance.
Do read the Heat Disorders Prevention Guide for more information to stay safe during this period:
