Netball Singapore Announces National Team for Mission Foods Nations Cup 2017

12 confirmed players with 3 debutants are set to represent Singapore in the annual netball tournament

31 October 2017, Singapore – Netball Singapore is proud to announce the team that will represent Singapore at the upcoming Mission Foods Nations Cup, which is set to take place from 3 to 9 December. The annual netball tournament will feature 12 players from the Singapore team, three of whom are debutants of the Nations Cup.

Milicich, who was recently appointed in September, was pleased to announce her selection as the team prepares to face one of the most competitive Nations Cup in history.

“I’m happy and confident with the team I’ve selected for the upcoming Mission Foods Nations Cup 2017 this December as I believe that these players have what it takes to face the tough competitors. I think they make a good team and with the right strategies and hard work, I hope we can get into the top two positions in the tournament,” said Milicich.

A mix of highly experienced and fresh players as young as 21 years old, the Nations Cup team comprises mostly of players from the SEA Games 2017 team and will be led by captain Vanessa Lee and co-vice captains Nurul Baizura and Charmaine Soh, who have numerous international caps under their belt.

The team also welcomes Siti Nurshawallah, a new player who will be making her first appearance at the Nations Cup at the OCBC Arena. Two other debutants of the six-nation netball tournament are Rima Yanti who featured in the Hong Kong-Singapore Cup in early 2017 and Toh Kai Wei who earned her first cap at the SEA Games 2017. Yu Mei Ling, who missed out on the SEA Games this year, is selected again under the new coach.

The team will be travelling to Auckland, New Zealand for a training stint from 18 to 25 November in preparations for the Nations Cup. They will be playing against bigger bodies and experienced club teams that will provide physical and tough games.

Spectators to the 12th edition of the Mission Foods Nations Cup hosted in Singapore can expect high levels of netball action and intense competition as Team Singapore will be competing against Malaysia (20th), Ireland (22nd), Hong Kong (24th), Swaziland (30th) and Cook Islands (unranked).

This year’s edition marks the first time both Cook Islands and Swaziland will be competing in the Nations Cup and will be forces to be reckoned with this December despite their current positions in the world ranking. Malaysia, the SEA Games 2017 gold medalist and current title-holder of the Asian Netball Championships, will also be posing a challenge to the rest of the participating nations. Having just defeated Singapore at the SEA Games in August with a 65-41 result, they will be looking to end the year on a high note with the Nations Cup title to their name.
