Whenever selecting players for the Singapore National Open and 21& Under Squads and Teams, the Selection Panel shall apply the following competencies, personal qualities and other considerations:
Core Playing Competencies:
• Possesses the physicality and sound quality of technical skills required of international playing standards (e.g. World Championships, Asian Championships).
• Displays tactical understanding to consistently make appropriate decisions in demanding situations.
• Displays strong instinctive abilities when reading/analyzing play.
• Sustains intensity in performance throughout the game.
• Shows potential in skills and capabilities to represent Singapore at the highest level.
Core Personal Qualities:
• Leadership- serves as a role model to others.
• Resilience- adapts well in face of adversity and bounces back from difficult situations.
• Self-awareness- manages emotions and unites the team for a shared goal
• Self-responsibility- motivated and demonstrates ability to manage all aspects of being an elite athlete
• Work ethic- disciplined and shows commitment to developing and maintaining the playing competencies required of an elite athlete.
• Coachability- shows a readiness to adopt and play to a specified playing style or game plan.
Positional Selection Criteria:
Shooter:
• Confident to go to the post.Â
• High shooting accuracy and volume.
• Consistency in shooting technique.
• Shot selection- understands when to shoot or pass.
• Shot range.
• Shot variations.Â
• Ability to work with co-shooter and the attacking unit.
• Understanding of space and space protection within and entering the goal circle.
• Strong rebounds.
• Awareness of defensive role
Wing Attack:
• Ability to connect at Centre Pass.
• Accuracy, control and variation in feeding skills (Ball Handling).
• Variety of attacking skills using good footwork (Movement).
• Ability to maintain possession in demanding situations (Decision Making).
• Ability to work with Centre and the attacking unit.
• Strong play-making skills to connect onto the circle edge and maintain court/ circle edge balance.
• Awareness of defensive role.
Centre:
• Ability to maintain possession in demanding situations (Decision Making)!
• Accuracy, control and variation in feeding skills (Ball Handling).
• Ability to interchange (with co-middie) and connect both ends of the court.
• Strong in one on one defensive skills.
• Ability to work with Wing Defender and the defending unit.
Wing Defence:
• Ability to create defensive turnovers (centre pass, through court)!
• Strong in one on one defensive skills.
• Variety of defensive skills i.e. to force opponents to run into restricted space.
• Ability to adopt different defensive strategies.
• Ability to recognize and adapt to the change of opponents’ attacking strategies.
• Ability to work with Centre and the defending unit to connect with attacking unit.
• Awareness of attacking role.
Circle Defence:
• Ability to create defensive turnovers (in and outside goal circle)!
• Elevation and timing strengths.
• Persistence and toughness of defensive effort.
• Court presence.
• Understanding of space and space denial within the goal circle.
• Variety of defensive skills i.e. to force opponents to run into restricted space.
• Variety of defence on shot skills at different ranges.
• Strong rebounds.
• Ability to work with co-Circle Defender and the defending unit.
• Ability to recognize and adapt to the change of shooters’ attacking strategies.
• Ability to adopt different defensive strategies (especially against tall shooters).
• Strong outlet attacking ability.
• Awareness of attacking role.
Considerations
When finalizing the Opens Team/Squad or 21&U Team/Squad consideration may be given to the following,
• Positional balance within the squad/team
• Succession planning for the future
• Event or competition competing in and the number within the calendar year
• If a players performance/abilities has changed by circumstances such as injury, illness, bereavement or loss, family/work/study commitments or returning from a significant period of time away from netball.
• What is best for the individual and/or team
It is acknowledged that when applying the criteria and considerations set out above, there will be, at times, extremely difficult choices to be made which will require the Selection Panel to exercise their discretion and judgment. Providing the selection panel has properly exercised the criteria and considerations set out in the Selection Policy and has exercised their discretion and judgment, in good faith, then the Selection Panel will have fulfilled all of its obligations under this Policy.
