M1 NSL Player Profile – Jocelyn NG

Jocelyn Ng, 24, GA/WA/GS, Mission Mannas

What was the best advice you were ever given?
“Always keep in mind that there’s always someone out there who is better than you” This phrase has always motivated me to be disciplined and to work doubly hard for what I want to achieve, be in it netball, work or academic.

Do you have a saying or motto that you live your life by?
“Don’t worry about failures. Worry about the chances you miss when you don’t even try.”

If you were to take up another sport, what would it be, and why?
Basketball – It’s the closest ball-game sport!

Can you describe yourself with 3 words?
Driven. Dedicated. Sporty

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
I will be 29 by then… Honestly I have not thought too much about what would happen to me in 5 years time… But I hope I’ll still be fit enough to play netball competitively/recreationally 😉

What was your most significant accomplishment (not netball related) in your life so far?
It may sound boring – Accomplished a double major from Murdoch University and doing my parents proud!

At what age did you start playing Netball?
13

Which Netball player (local/international) do you look up to?
Maria Tutaia, from New Zealand. Her smooth shooting style and her deadly accuracy from anywhere inside the circle thrills me!

What sparked your interest in Netball?
Back in secondary school, they did not offer Basketball, and so… Netball being the closest ball-game sport, I ended up playing since then!

What position do you play?
GA, WA, C

If given the chance to play another position, what would it be?
GD maybe!

What is your biggest challenge as a Netball player, and what do you do to manage this challenge?
My size is not considered very ideal in Netball – be it horizontally or vertically… I manage this by getting myself stronger in the gym! E.g. Doing exercises to get an increase in elevation

What do you look forward to accomplishing in the M1 Netball Super League 2016?
To be one of the top 4 teams playing in the Semis/Finals!

Why do you play Netball?
I play netball because it is a fast-paced sport; it makes me think and anticipate my teammate’s move! I jump, fly and dodge! Doing short sprints and performing hard stops often injure my big toes, but still… It doesn’t stop me from playing! And it definitely helps to burn calories!

How has Netball impacted your life?
With trainings almost 6 days a week (NSL on both Sat&Sun would make 7-day training a week!!), I don’t know what my life would be like without Netball actually… I don’t know if I would be the same person or enjoy life in the same way I do now. Netball has shown me how to overcome adversity, it builds confidence and teaches me to work with others to achieve a goal.
Netball (probably just like any other sports) has a way of bringing people together, whether it’s a family or a community – Just look at the recent Beach Netball where both genders get to play and have fun together!

How do you plan on achieving your team’s goals?
Considering that we are a mixed team, coming from different clubs and having different playing styles – we need to really communicate and play as one!

In your opinion, which team is the strongest?
It’s really tough to judge now that we are only in the first round… The ball is round!! In my opinion, it will be Magic Marlins I guess…!

Which team(s) is/are you most excited to play against, and why?
Tiger Sharks? Playing against another mixed (new-formed) team!

Besides than your own team, which team do you think will win this year’s M1 Netball Super League?
Magic Marlins…

What does your team do before every game?
Hmmm… Get our niggles sorted with the physio before the game starts!

What do you think you and your team will do with the money if you girls win?
Use the money to buy more tapes 😛
