Athlete Life Coaching (ALC) is about
“Empowering athletes to integrate their academic, career & other life goals around their sporting aspirations”
 
We invite you to register for this upcoming course. Held at the RP campus, all necessary COVID-19 precautions will be observed, in full compliance of the guidelines MOE and MOH has provided for educational institutions.   
 
The course is suitable for those who work with athletes such as:

  • Sport administrators, coaches and staff from NSAs
  • Student life officers, educators and CCA leaders from educational institutions
  • Executives from public agencies who are involved in sport development
  • Executives from private enterprises in sport related businesses

 
The learning objectives are to equip participants with:  

  • knowledge of the sport development ecosystem (role of the National Sports Associations (NSAs), Singapore’s high performance system (HPS), school sports system, etc).
  • knowledge of sports-specific terminology such as athlete life coaching plan, training and competition plan, daily training environment, selection criteria, de-selection, major games cycles as well as the roles of athlete life and sport coaches.
  • Mentoring / coaching / counselling skills that could be applied to help athletes reach life, sports, academics and career goals.

 
The methodology is:

  • Hands-on practice sessions to help participants internalise learning effectively.
  • Class discussions to facilitate cross learning of best approaches in mentoring / coaching / counselling.

1. Psychometric Assessment 
By Christine Khoo
This module introduces the importance of needs analysis and jointly developing workable and practical solutions using psychological assessment for athletes.
Key areas to be covered include clinical and career assessment methods and tools for measuring characteristics such as intelligence and personality in an athlete.
This module will provide the participants with the scaffolds to design a counselling plan which the participants will implement in Module 2.
7 hours, with a project by participants to compile a list of useful resources.
2. Counselling Skills By Melvin LimThis module introduces / refreshes the common principles of coaching, counselling, mentoring, followed by essential counselling skills. Participants will be introduced to tools like OARS, SOLAR and SMART.
This module will focus on providing participants with intense practice to apply the skills learnt.
7 hours, including self-directed pre-programme research on the Skilled Helper Model, Role-play and solution focused coaching/counselling.
3 hours of practice.
Understanding the Sport Ecosystem
By Ho Mun Wai
This module aims to provide an overview of the sporting ecosystem, the sport development pathway (phases, etc.) as well as the relationship between the coach and athlete.
It provides an understanding of the different organisations and stakeholders and their roles in developing the athlete (schools, coaches, NSAs, clubs, Sport Singapore, SSI, NYSI, overseas partners).
With deeper collaboration between the different organisations involved, the developing athlete is more likely to receive the necessary support to achieve his best sporting goals.
4 hours.
4. Project (Application of coaching / counselling / mentoring)
By Christine Khoo, Ho Mun Wai and Melvin Lim
Participants will be required to apply the knowledge and skills learnt in Modules 1 to 3. They will design and implement a plan for an athlete or client using the appropriate frameworks or models.
Deliverables:
  1. Practice in writing case notes.
  2. Interactive assessment (facilitated through Microsoft Teams).
 
Upon successful completion of the project, participants would receive the certification.
7 hours, comprising:
Self-study, research, preparation, planning, profiling, conducting session/s with either an athlete or a client and writing of case notes (at participant’s own time, in consultation with the assigned Supervisor) and the online interactive assessment.

Venue: Republic Polytechnic CET Room (room number to be confirmed later)
 
Assessment Date: 25 March 2021 (held online, using Microsoft Teams)
