Singapore have been crowned Champions of the inaugural 4 Nations Netball Cup following a dramatic 46-41 win over Papua New Guinea. More than 2000 vociferous fans almost tore the roof off the Toa Payoh Sports Hall when Mrs Lim Hwee Hua, Minister of State for Finance and Transport presented the Challenge Trophy to Co-Captains Pearline Chan & Jean Ng on Saturday.
The finals match was a back and forth encounter that had the crowd on the edge of their seats. After falling behind in the opening quarter, the Singapore team fought back, and the game was tied at 39-39 with five minutes remaining in the last quarter. The atmosphere in the sports hall was electrifying , with the home crowd cheering the Singapore team on throughout the match. Singapore pushed themselves to eventually win by a slim five-point margin.
But it’s not over for the Singapore A girls. The squad will now turn their full attention to the World Netball Championship in July. The World Championship was initially slated for Fiji, but with the political situation there, the International Federation of Netball Association (IFNA) has confirmed that a new venue will be selected.
The third and fourth places were decided earlier with Scotland nudging out Canada 55-38. The Scots looked tired in the opening quarter but slowly took control of the match and eased ahead to claim the third spot.
