:: ASEAN Schools Games 2011 Netball Champions19-08-2011
Netball Singapore and MOE congratulate our 19 and Under National Netball Team on their recent success at the 3rd ASEAN Schools Games Netball competition.
This is the first time that Singapore has won this event. Whilst they had relatively easy matches against both Brunei and Thailand, their fierce rivalry with Malaysia was exemplified in their respective matches.
Singapore lost a tightly contested match in the preliminary rounds against Malaysia losing 31-34. However, Coach Zhang Rongzhen was able to steel her players to tackle Malaysia head on in the Grand Final and take what became a resounding lead at the end of the first quarter. From then on Singapore was able to hold on to this lead and take out the Championship defeating Malaysia 47-38.

This is a particularly outstanding achievement given that the team had a short lead in time and preparation for the event. This was mainly due to the fact that the ASEAN Schools Games coincided with the Mission Foods World Netball Championships which were held in Singapore. The Team Officials, including the Coach, were co-opted from Netball Singapore and the Ministry of Education who gelled together quickly in the lead up to the Event. We are very proud of the team and their efforts.
