IFNA’s Congress resolved on 11 November 2007 to entrust the hosting of the World Netball Championships in 2011 to NS after a competitive bid with Australia. The tournament will make a return to Singapore’s shores after 28 years when it last hosted the Championships in 1983.

Guest-of-Honour, Minister for Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports, Dr Vivian Balakrishnan, was present to witness the official signing ceremony. In attendance were: President of IFNA, Ms Molly Rhone; Member of Parliament, East Coast GRC and also Chairman of the Organising Committee for the World Netball Championships (WNC) 2011, Ms Jessica Tan; President of Netball Singapore, Mr Tan Wee Khim and Chief Executive Officer of Singapore Sports Council (SSC), Mr Oon Jin Teik.

Commenting on this important milestone, Mr. Tan Wee Khim, President of Netball Singapore said, “Today marks another important day for Singapore sports. The granting of the rights to host the World Netball Championships to Singapore is a reflection of the international sporting community’s recognition of our readiness and capabilities in hosting major international sporting events. Such events will further enhance Singapore’s position on the world sporting map and pave the way for other prestigious championships to be hosted here in the future.”

During the evaluation phase of Singapore’s bid, IFNA delegates, including President Molly Rhone and Vice President Kereyn Smith, visited Singapore and inspected the Singapore Indoor Stadium - venue for the World Netball Championships in 2011.

On her return to Singapore, the IFNA President said, “I am delighted to be in Singapore for the signing ceremony of the Organizer Agreement for the 13th World Netball Championships. Singapore’s bid scored an overwhelming victory at Congress and the IFNA Board must thank the Government and the Singapore Sports Council for the support given to Netball Singapore and the bid team. IFNA is aware of the detailed planning which has already started and based on Singapore’s reputation, we are confident that the World Championships in 2011 will be an exceptional and memorable event. IFNA is excited about working with the Organizing Committee and Netball Singapore in staging our next premier event and showcasing our sport, Netball, to the world. “

In recent years, Singapore has hosted and competed in international netball tournaments such as the Asian Netball Championships in 2005 in which we emerged champions. Singapore has also hosted and organized the Netball Nations Cup in 2006 and 2007. Netball enthusiasts can look forward to the Fisher & Paykel Nations Cup 2008 from 31 August to 6 September 2008 where Singapore will be competing to retain its crown against countries such as Samoa, Papua New Guinea, Sri Lanka and Botswana. Malaysia has been invited to participate in place of Northern Ireland which has withdrawn.

Singapore wins bid to host 2011 World Netball Championships!

Singapore, 10 November 2007 – Members of the International Federation of Netball Associations (IFNA), convened at the 2007 Congress in Auckland, New Zealand and in a majority vote, awarded the hosting of the 13th World Netball Championships to Singapore in 2011.

The bidding process between Singapore and Melbourne, Australia started back in 2006 and concluded with a presentation to delegates at Congress.

Singapore would play host to the Championships, which will feature 16 nations from five continents competing and fighting for the final glory at the championships. This international marquee event would be another milestone for Singapore as a world-class sports venue.

At the same time, by bringing the Championships to Singapore, it will fulfill our aim of promoting sports participation and sports excellence and further contribute towards positioning Singapore as an international and regional sports hub with a calendar filled with year-round, top-flight sporting action.

Said IFNA President, Molly Rhone, “I am delighted that for this edition of netball’s premier event we have had such a close contest. Both countries were very well equipped to host the event. I visited Singapore in January this year and was very impressed with their plans for the Sports Hub and I am delighted that we can now bring our showcase event here in 2011.”

This is not the first time that netball’s premier international event has been hosted in Singapore as, Tan Wee Khim, President of Netball Singapore said:

“We are very pleased to win the international netball community's mandate to host the 2011 World Netball Championships in Singapore and would like to thank all countries for their support.

We are very excited to see the return of the World Netball Championships after 28 years and are confident that this will lead to a resurgence of the sport in our region. Our hosting of this event will also aid the development of netball as one of the most recognizable sports, and it will inspire a whole new generation of budding netballers.

Singapore is already an exciting sports and tourism destination today. When the many multi-billion dollar sports and recreational projects now under development are completed at the end of this decade, it will be an even more compelling place to visit. We aim to stage a most memorable world netball event in an Asian cultural setting and look forward to being your host in 4 year's time.”

Added Oon Jin Teik, Chief Executive Officer of the Singapore Sports Council,
“We are ecstatic on this win! The Singapore Sports Council is truly excited that Singapore has won the bid to host the World Netball Championships 2011 and would like to thank IFNA for their support. Winning such a bid is a true testimony of Singapore’s reputation as a venue of choice in staging major sports championships and international sporting events.

This is an important milestone for netball in Singapore and another feather in our cap. Holding the Championships in Singapore is an enormous opportunity for our local players to gain international competition exposure as they benchmark against world-class players and it will also be a huge boost to netball’s popularity in the local community and in Asia.

Netball enthusiasts can look forward to watching a spectacular showcase of top netball players in action come 2011.”
