Umpire Courses

To support the development of umpires, Netball Singapore holds regular umpiring accreditation courses.

The following courses are available:

Level 1 Umpiring Course

Purpose:

  • To develop confident knowledgeable umpires  
  • To provide teachers, coaches and players with a better understanding of netball rules and umpiring  
  • To identify talented umpires for future coaching 

Syllabus & Duration:

  • Online Theory Exam:  1 hour (Must be completed prior to the Level 1 course and certificate of completion submitted on the first day of the course)
  • Rules Theory & Umpiring Techniques: 4 – 5 hours
  • Practical Experience with Coaching: 4 – 5 hours

Level One Course Presenters

  • Presenters will be appointed by Netball Singapore.
  • They will have a current Theory pass and a minimum of C Badge experience. (i.e. they might not be a current badge holder but have been in the past).

Special Notes:

  • Level 1 is for Umpires to learn and gain confidence in a supportive environment.
  • Presenters appointed by Netball Singapore.
  • Minimum age -12 years old
  • A full Level 1 certificate will be awarded at the completion of the course i.e. after passing the theory and completing the practical application). If a participant only attends the course and passes the theory test they may be awarded an attendance certificate, if requested.
  • Talented Umpires will be identified during the course and coached towards badging
  • If an umpire has not become badged after two years they will have to redo Level 1 before applying for badging. In exceptional circumstances the Technical Manager may grant an extension.
  • It is intended that people completing the Level 1 will be ready to umpire. They will be allocated games according to their ability.

  • Netball Singapore (9am-6pm, Mondays-Fridays, except Public Holidays) – By Cash or Cheque  (Collect Course  Materials and Rulebook) 
  • Post – By Cheque (Collect Course Materials and Rulebook before or on first day of course) 
  • Fax or Email – Pay and collect Course Materials and Rulebook before or on first day of course

3. Receive an email confirmation with course details

4. Complete the Theory Exam Online and submit copy of certificate of completion on first day of course

  • C Badge requires 70%, B Badge 80% and A Badge 90%
  • The most recent test mark is the result considered current.
  • Test result is valid for 6 years

 

Umpires and Coaches completing their Level 1 certificates and/or updating their Rules Theory will now be able to complete this online Free of Charge!

Netball Australia has granted permission to Netball Singapore for our Umpires and Coaches to access their Online Umpire Exam Centre via their website in order to complete the Exam.  This means that Umpires and Coaches who are completing Level 1 courses and/or updating their Theory mark no longer need to sit their Theory Paper at Netball Singapore!

There are 100 multiple-choice questions to be completed in 60 minutes. This test is free of charge and there are no limits to the number of times you may attempt it.  If a pass mark is not achieved, feedback on correct / incorrect answers will not be given to encourage participants to go back to the rule book.

Umpires/Coaches need to follow the steps below to complete the exam and will be required to print out and provide a copy of their certificate to Netball Singapore for validation and record keeping purposes.

Level 1 Umpires Camp

Netball Singapore is organising for all our Level 1 Umpires, a 2-day non-residential camp on the 27 & 28 Aug 2011 from 9am – 6pm. 

Purpose:

  • To strengthen Level 1 Umpires’ techniques and skills
  • To prepare Level 1 Umpires for testing during the upcoming Energizer National League
  • To talent identify potential umpires to further development

Topics (not limited to the following)

  • Umpiring Accreditation and Pathways
  • Rules Discussion
  • Protocols and Procedures
  • Practical Umpiring with coaching

Presenters:

  • National Testing Panels
  • Assisted by National Squad Umpires

Cost:

  • $40 (includes course materials and morning / afternoon tea breaks)
  • Register before 19 Aug 2011 and receive a $10 early bird discount (I.e. pay only $30)

  • Minimum 15, Maximum 40

Badging

  • With the recent change to the Netball Singapore Umpires Pathway and Accreditation system, all Level 1 umpires must apply to be badged within 2 years of achieving their award.
  • All Basic and Cadet umpires were asked to notify by March 2010 their intent to be badged. Please email to courses@netball.org.sg if you have changed your contact details and email addresses.
  • For all badging applications (including B and A Badges), please fill in the application form (found above) and submit to Netball Singapore. An assessment fee of $20 may be paid by cash during office hours or cheque posted together with the application form to;

  • Once your registration has been received, you will be informed the next step of your badging process (see below).

1) 70% pass on Section 1 Theory Exam

2) Complete Level 1 Umpire Course

3) Attend 3 units of a Rules Discussion in preceding 12 months. Alternatively have attended the Level 1 course (4 hours) in the previous 12 months

4) Beep Test Result of 7 within previous 3 months

5) Recommendation by an Umpire Coach / Tester is ready to be badged.

6) Practical Assessment :

a. 1 game (4x15 mins)
b. Minimum School A Division or National League Division 4-6 (depending on number of divisions).
c. Assessed as per KPI sheet.

d. Assessors unanimous in decision.


Terms and Conditions:

  • Netball Singapore reserves the right to postpone or cancel the workshop if the numbers do not meet the minimum requirement.
  • In the event of cancellation, all participants and schools will be informed well in advance.
  • If participants wish to withdraw from the workshop and obtain a refund, coaches/schools have to notify Netball Singapore in writing. A letter of notification must be submitted to Netball Singapore 3 days before the workshop commences.  An administration fee of S$5.00 will be deducted from any refund within 3 days notice.  No refund will be given if 3 days notice is not provided.
  • The Level 1 Umpiring Course cost fees includes 4-hour theory and a one-time free practical assessment. In the event participants need to retake the practical assessment, a fee of S$20.00 will be charged for each subsequent practical assessment.
  • Payment is made via paypal
  • Receipts will be issued upon payment. 
  • All participants are expected to turn up upon registration.
