Mission Foods Nations Cup Returns this December

Posted 11 Oct 2017
Expect high levels of netball action and intense competition between the teams at this year’s tournament

11 October 2017, Singapore – The 12th edition of the Mission Foods Nations Cup will be held from 3 to 9 December and tickets to the annual netball tournament will be available for purchase starting tomorrow (12 October). The six-nation netball championship hosted in Singapore will see Team Singapore compete against Malaysia (20th)*, Ireland (22nd), Hong Kong (24th), Swaziland (30th) and Cook Islands (unranked) at the OCBC Arena.

This year’s edition marks the first time both Cook Islands and Swaziland will be competing in the Nations Cup. Traditionally a strong netball playing nation, the Nations Cup will be crucial to Cook Islands in getting back their ranking, which they lost due to the lack of international test matches played. From the African region, Swaziland have recently beaten Botswana (21st) in the African Netball Championships in September. Both countries will beforces to be reckoned with this December despite their current positions in the world ranking.

Malaysia, the SEA Games 2017 gold medalist and current title-holder of the Asian Netball Championships, will also be posing a challenge to the rest of the participating nations. Having just defeated Singapore at the SEA Games in August with a 65-41 result, they will be looking to end the year on a high note with the Nations Cup title to their name.

Singapore’s newly-appointed coach Natalie Milicich, however, is confident that the local team will be able to bounce back at the upcoming Mission Foods Nations Cup 2017.

“We are aiming for the top two positions in the Mission Foods Nations Cup 2017 this December. The nations participating this year are tough competitors and we will not be underestimating the strength of the teams. It will be a good opportunity to see where we are at globally and further work on strategies to improve our performance,” said Milicich, who took up her new role in September, replacing former national coach Ruth Aitken.

Schools can also show their support to Team Singapore for the Mission Foods Nations Cup 2017 by being part of the Schools Outreach Programme. Open to students from primary, secondary and tertiary institutions, the Schools Outreach Programme includes three programmes which allow the students to experience the pride of being the voice behind the Singapore team or the friendly guests of the participating teams as they enjoy the thrill of watching competitive international netball action at the tournament .

The newest programme this year, The Biggest Cheer, requires interested schools to compose, film and submit an original English cheer for Team Singapore and stand a chance to be invited to cheer for Team Singapore at the tournament and featured on Netball Singapore’s social media accounts too.

Early bird tickets for the Mission Foods Nations Cup 2017 will go on sale starting 12 October till 26 November, with prices starting at $5 for students. The public also gets to enjoy up to 40% off passes like the Family Package and Season Pass during the early bird ticket sales period
